WHAT OWNS YOUR FEAR? SHARKS OR TOILETS?
Here’s a little reality check before your next trip to the loo.
I wanted to highlight how fear can control us so I chose two very interesting subjects for the test, a shark and a toilet! Globally, shark attacks are extremely rare. Recent data from the International Shark Attack File shows that there are usually only about 6–10 shark-attack deaths worldwide each year, sad but tiny numbers compared to how much fear there is around sharks. Now consider this: in everyday life, toilets and bathrooms are linked to far more injuries, in the U.S. alone, around 235,000 people are treated for bathroom falls and injuries annually, many involving toilets and related slips. Grokipedia And while exact global toilet-related death stats are messy because they’re tied up in broken razor sharp ceramics, sanitation issues, poor sanitation and lack of safe toilets are linked to hundreds of thousands of deaths globally each year, a far greater risk than shark attacks.
Yet most people feel terror at the idea of a shark in the water and barely think twice about slipping in our bathroom.
Why?
Because fear isn’t born from real risk, fear is a program.
Stories. Images. Movies. Headlines.
Sharks get mythologised. Toilets don’t.
So here’s the question to sit with (pun intended):
What fears are shaping your life that aren’t based on facts?
And what inside you has been quietly steering your attention away from what truly matters into fears that don't?
Fear only owns you when you give it control.
Reality, the real number-based kind often shows a very different picture.
Next time fear comes to say hello in your world, challenge it.
With love,
Koga
